Skimming
Plastering Warrington are extremely proud of our team's expertise in skimming. It is often regarded as one of trickiest plastering skills to master and when done incorrectly can look worse than the damage it is attempting to fix. It is therefore much wiser to choose an experienced professional to do the job! A Handy Guide to Skimming A skim is a thin layer of plaster applied to an already plastered wall or ceiling. It has a very fine texture and feels smooth to the touch. It’s the part of the plastering process that you can see once the plasterers have left. A skim coat is used either as the top finishing coat after a prior coat of plaster has been applied, or as a new surface when the existing plaster is slightly damaged or cracked. If the old plaster underneath is essentially sound and has been well prepared, a skim coat will make it look like new again. Skimming produces a layer roughly 2mm thick and will hide most scratches and dents caused by wear and tear. It also provides the smooth finish needed for painting or wallpapering. For a skim to be effective, the existing finish must be well prepared. A skim coat can be applied to a painted wall, but this is only recommended if the paint is sound. Otherwise, the wall will need to be sanded down to provide a good key for the skim. Any significant imperfections or faults will need to be filled and sanded and loose and crumbling plaster must be fixed or removed. It is important to check whether the existing plaster is clean and firmly affixed to the underlying structure. If necessary, a layer of PVA can be applied to the surface using a roller prior to the skim coat being applied. This will help it adhere to the original layer. With the correct preparation the skim will look excellent. Get it wrong, and it may end up looking worse than before you started. It is important to get good advice on whether a surface can be skimmed or whether it requires a complete re-plaster. Some people will often skim a wall or ceiling in an attempt to save time and costs but quickly discover that the result is ruined by the inadequate plasterwork underneath. Sadly this can only be remedied by removal of all the plaster and starting afresh. A good skim by an experienced and conscientious plasterer can can make an old wall look clean and sharp again. Rooms can be transformed to look fresh and modern and at far less cost than a complete re-plastering. This is particularly important if walls or ceilings are to be painted rather than papered where any imperfections in plasterwork can be readily seen.
