Rendering
Rendering is an external wall covering used to protect a building from the extremes of weather. Over the centuries many different materials have been used from mud and dung to wood and lime, all of which help to insulate and protect walls from the elements. Most modern renders are tough durable plaster renders that give a smooth attractive finish to a house and last for many years. It's believed that rendering your home can make it far more energy efficient. Around 30 per cent of heat is lost through normal external walls, but this is vastly reduced by rendering and helps to save both the planet and your money. Many people associate rendering with the drab grey pebble-dash of 1950s and later housing but that's a world away from the modern specialist products that are available on the market today. These use new silicones and acrylics which still have all the advantages of traditional renders but offer even greater durability, flexibility and often a maintenance-free lifespan. They provide smooth or textured surfaces that can be painted to suit, or even injected with the colour of your choice prior to application. The modern rendered house looks sleek and elegant with sharp eye-catching lines highlighted in attractive contemporary colours and shades. Render will not only protect your building from damage caused by wind and rain, it will also save you money on your heating costs and transport your house into the twenty-first century. A good render will add value to your home and increases prestige and saleability. Whatever your property and whatever your budget, there are a wide range of renders available to choose from. Whether you're after smooth or textured, traditional or modern, there is a render to suit your needs. Types of Render Cement Render The most common form of render in the last one hundred years had been the cement based render. It's a cheap and hard-wearing option but requires regular painting to keep it looking good. Cement renders are mixed on site and usually require several coats of varying coarseness to apply. It is an extremely durable form of render but can be subject to cracking should the building underneath move or settle in any way. Lime Render Lime Render has been used for centuries to protect houses in the UK and is now making a comeback as people are rediscovering it's usefulness, particularly for older properties. Although harder to apply than cement render, and more costly to use, it is in fact a far superior product. It has the ability to let moisture pass through it, thus allowing the house underneath to breathe and prevent damp and mould from forming internally. This is why it's a popular choice for renovation projects and conservation work. Many older houses have suffered a considerable degree of damage from modern concrete renders trapping moisture in the walls causing significant damp problems. Lime render also has the advantage of being flexible should the house move or settle in any way. Unlike concrete render it will not crack but instead moves with the natural shift in the building structure. Lime is also a natural fungicide and will prevent the growth of mould. Alongside all this it also looks stunning and will enhance the appearance of modern houses as well as period ones. It does however require reapplication every four to five years but is otherwise maintenance free. In the last decade, some companies have introduced high-tech lime render products intended to be easier to use but retaining all the advantages of the traditional product. The addition of silicones in products such as K-Lime, brings this ancient rendering material into the twenty-first century. Polymer Render Polymer renders are another new innovative product that are beginning to take over in popularity from cement renders. They are highly flexible and will not crack should the building move or settle underneath. They are also highly durable and maintenance free. Polymer products are usually premixed and can be pre-coloured and through-coloured meaning that no further painting is required once they have been applied. The wide range of contemporary colours and textures suit any modern home or commercial building. As they are silicone based, most polymer renders will allow your house to breathe and some are even self-cleaning, ideal for buildings where there is lots of vegetation and the risk of organic overgrowth. Acrylic Render Acrylic renders have a plastic acrylic added making them much stronger and more flexible than traditional cement based renders. They require only a thin coat which is created using fine acrylic hairs lying in different directions to form a highly flexible mat coating. This elasticity means they will not crack if the building moves or settles. It can be applied to a range of different surfaces including painted walls, concrete and timber and a wide variety of different finishes and textures can be applied. It doesn't degrade in UV light and is incredibly strong against the elements. Acrylic render forms an absolutely impenetrable barrier to water whilst still allowing the building underneath to breathe and is resistant to mould and bacteria. It is also very fast drying and will be ready to be painted in a few days after application. K-Rend K-Rend are a British company who have popularised the use of silicone in renders. They are likely the most popular rendering products in the country at the moment. Silicone is highly water replant and is self-cleaning and is therefore largely maintenance free. K-Rend manufacture a number of different lines, for every sort of property. They come in a range of colours and finishes, a nd are extremely durable and hard-wearing. |
